Commissioners meet in Bryan County

The issue of how to pay for the Bryan County Jail and a pending loan could end up in the hands of a federal grand jury.

Commissioners met this morning and approved to ask for that investigation.

The problem goes back to 2002 when the county took out a loan with First United Bank for $1.6 million. They still owe $500,000.

The sales tax increase, which was supposed to pay the loan, was instead used to buy and renovate the auxiliary jail, which of course has had countless escapes.

Now the current commissioners have to clean up the mess.

"It’s my belief that the bonding company should be held responsible for that. Especially since they got the funds for the one thing and used it for another,” said county commissioner Monty Montgomery.

The commissioners say they just want advice from investigators on how to resolve the problem.
