Animal Waste Pool in Pottsboro

An animal waste pool behind the Pottsboro school district agricultural barn is now being investigated by the state.

"If I'd been someone else I probably would have been upset a long time ago," said Pottsboro resident Leo Hasten.

Hasten has lived on cardinal lane in Pottsboro since 1984 and owns a couple of acres. He does not like what he sees just south of his home. It is a pool of animal waste behind the school district Ag barn.

"When the winds are right, we live north of here and the wind is blowing out of the south quite often just the other day I was in my backyard and I could smell it pretty good it was powerful," said Hasten.

Last year, the Pottsboro police department and the Grayson county environmental office received complaints about the pool. Environmental officials say the complaints came after the pool flooded over during heavy spring rains dumping contents of the pool into a nearby creek.

"It’s an act of God that caused the problem, but it’s basically an act of man that allowed the problem to exist so it’s something that we needed to look into," said Grayson County Environmental officer Jim White.

Grayson County environmental officer Jim White says the pool is located within the city limits and involves a public entity, Pottsboro ISD. That’s why they turned it over to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, who is negotiating with the school district to see if something can be done to fix the problem.

"Tell them they need to do whatever they need to do to come into compliance fill in the pit, make the pit bigger, clean the pit, close the pit or whatever," said White.

Pottsboro ISD officials would not go on camera for this story, but say they are working on getting the pool cleaned up in the next couple of weeks. Something hasten would appreciate before the summer comes.

"I would imagine in the summer time you would have mosquitoes and insect and animals come up during the night,” said Hasten.

i agree carmen. seems funny the "FREAK" out is a bit mudane. Rushings should have that pile of poop on that nice piece of property as well maybe it would over ribe the stench of Fossil poop which is what asphalt is made from.

I think the TCEQ needs to get their priorities straight. You have one person complaining about a small pool of waste, and the TCEQ comes unglued. They say that the pool is inside the city limits and concerns a public entity (Pottsboro Schools), so they are going to force the school to come into compliance and clean up the small pool of poop. I agree that the pool should be cleaned up and that Mr. Hasten should not have to smell it. That's just the right thing to do. What I want to know is why Grayson County Environmental Officer Jim White doesn't get this upset over the Asphalt plant that is going in right next to the public entity (Pottsboro High School). There are hundreds of people complaining about it, and hundreds of children and local citizens will be breathing in hazardous emissions from this plant. The smell will be much worse than what Mr. Hasten has had to deal with from this small pool that I could probably jump over. Yes, the pool should be cleaned up for Mr. Hasten, and Yes, the Asphalt plant needs to be relocated for our Children! Let's get our priorities straight and do the right thing!! These children deserve to attend school, and smell clean, fresh air! I guess if the asphalt plant was painted green and had a goat or two around it you might force Mr. Rushing to move it! COME ON!

I dont think that the waste pool is that big of a problem because pretty soon the sky is going to look like that and smell like that with Rushing Paving putting in their asphalt plant!

I think that it is the most stupiedest thing that any one could do. I really think that Pottsboro does not have enough money to get a trash cubical to dup the waste.
