The University of Texas at Austin has a program in place to notify students via text message if there is an emergency on campus like the one at Virginia Tech.

Some say text messages, rather than emails, would have been a better way to relay critical information to students.

The program is called Longhorns Mobilecampus and sends important messages, whether they be emergency, weather-related, or otherwise from the university to students via their cell phones.

Eleven universities around the country have such a program.

Officials across Texas' college campuses are reassuring students, faculty and staff about campus safety procedures after the deadly Virginia Tech attacks.

The Associated Press reports public and private schools across the state are re-examining their campus procedures and emergency warning systems.

Here's more:

-- University of Texas-El Paso president Diana Natalicio says
the UTEP family and the community expect the school to be prepared
to respond to any emergencies that may arise. She says they take
that responsibility very seriously.

-- Southern Methodist University, the apparent winner to host the George W. Bush's presidential library, and University of Texas, site of the worst U.S. campus shooting before Monday's massacre in Virginia, say training has been conducted for shooting scenarios.

-- Texas Tech University says it's working to improve mass telephone messaging on its Lubbock campus along with other emergency communications.

-- The head of the University of Texas-Pan American has asked the school's vice presidents to review the campus its emergency management procedures. U-T-P-A president Blandina Cardenas also asked students to go beyond the safety aspect and be more caring.

-- Baylor University in Waco is the world's largest Baptist university with about 14,000 students. Baylor has a public-address system in all dorms and in some classrooms. It also has an emergency notification system in which the cell phones of students and professors are called and a recorded message is played.

A similar system is being developed in which a text message will be delivered to cell phones.
