DAVIS, Okla. -- One of the worst calls law enforcement officials say they receive is a parent reporting their child missing.
But the Davis Police Department is doing something unique to prevent that, and it’s free. Parents just have to say yes.
Parents can ease their minds and also help local law enforcement if one of the worst events were to ever happen.
Davis High School students took part in a DNA identification program called Finger Print America and it’s a quick, painless process.
First the child takes a kit, writes down their personal information, DNA is then swabbed from the mouth, finger prints are taken and then placed onto a card, before they’re finally sent back to their parents to keep.
The program is modeled after larger cities like Oklahoma City and Dallas. Emergency agencies within Murray County pitched in to raise $2,500, enough to ID every child in the county from pre-k to high school seniors.
Davis Police Chief Danny Cooper says this is the first time they have done such a program on a large scale.
"The overall purpose is to give parents another security in case an incident, abductions natural disaster, anything like that, happens."
The county has several hundred of the DNA kits. Chief Danny Cooper says if you want one for your child, you can drop by the Davis Police Department
