Before putting that letter in the mailbox, better check the postage.
Rates for a first-class card or letter will be 41 cents
effective Monday, two cents more than they have been.
However, those trying to mail letter weighing more than one once
may get a break. The cost for each additional ounce drops to 17
cents, so heavier letters such as wedding invitations will be
cheaper. The rate had been 24 cents per extra ounce.
Because most post offices are closed today, officials say items
dropped in a box that will not be collected until tomorrow and
should have the higher postage on them. However, the post office
does not plan a rash of returns for insufficient postage.
And, the new "forever" stamp is also available. It will remain
valid regardless of any future rate increase.
