DURANT, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Legislature approved a bill last week that would create a tax free weekend in early august before the school year begins.

Now businesses are getting ready for what they expect to be a very profitable three days.

Three years ago, Senator Jay Paul Gumm introduced a tax free weekend bill into the Legislature now the bill has passed, creating an opportunity for Oklahoma businesses to bring back revenue that is lost to Texas in early August.

Durant Wal-Mart store manager Mike Snell is one of many business leaders in Durant excited to see a tax free weekend finally come to Oklahoma.

Just like Texas has offered for the last ten years, Oklahoma will now have a tax free weekend before the school year begins the first weekend in August.

Store owners say that during the Texas tax free weekend, they see their sales decrease considerably.

But now that won't be the case, and the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce is working to get businesses together and form a campaign to bring people into the city to shop.

On Thursday afternoon, store owners of Wal-Mart, Choctaw Retail Store, The Stage Door, and Goody's met with smaller retail shops and chamber officials to brainstorm ideas to promote the weekend.

Chamber officials say they are excited about the additional revenue it will bring but are looking forward to smaller stores getting a little more attention.

"In order to make this work, we have to get the smaller businesses in and they are willing to everything they possibly can."

Chamber officials say they are still in the preliminary stages of planning for tax free weekend, but store managers are already planning on holding special promotions in order to draw in more sales.
