Last month, tragedy struck the campus of Virginia Tech University. A gunman entered a building on campus and opened fire. It was an event that shocked the whole nation, especially those in the Virginia Tech family.

At Saturday’s graduation, a professor at the University as well as a Denison native, shared his experiences with those of the class of 2007.

On April 16, 2007, on the campus of the Virginia Tech, Professor Don Taylor was in his office. As a shooting rampage began.

Taylor says "We were locked down pretty quickly in our office, there was really no personal fear just a lot of concern afterwards."

Professor Taylor, along with the rest of the campus, worried about friends, who he later would find didn’t make it out alive. "Of course these things are tragic, anytime it happens anywhere in the world, the catch is its a little bit different when its friends getting shot at."

But on Saturday, he took those experiences and used them to inspire students, at his alma mater, Denison High School.

"I am very proud of the education I got here."

Taylor graduated from DHS in 1978, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. Denison Superintendent Henry Scott was principal of DHS when Taylor went to school. He say’s he’s proud to have Taylor back to speak to the students. “I was the high school principal and back then you knew he was going to make a mark on the world."

Denison ISD asked Taylor to speak over a year ago, before the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

Taylor says he thought about incorporating his experiences over the last month in the speech, but in the end it was reminding students to focus on their goals that was more important.

"I want to encourage students to achieve, the worlds to small for. Hatred."
