A special ceremony in Calera, to honor the efforts of a 1956 boys state championship basketball team.

Eight of the ten original members of the team were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony, to unveil four signs honoring the teams efforts 51 years ago.

That team played 34 games, winning 32 of them, on their way to the title. To this day, that was the only state championship title the school has had.

The Calera High School Alumni Association Sponsored the event. Which featured a speech from Senator Jay Paul Gumm. Organizers say the money raised to purchase the signs was raised in a matter of days and adds it’s a small price to pay for a group that still means so much to the community.

Mary Burcham says, ““They were good guys they played good together, they yelled well together, they were just a good team they were good boys."

Organizers say they plan on putting the four signs at each end of the city.
