WILSON, Okla. -- The city of Wilson can finally join together under one roof, and on Saturday they opened their doors.
Shiny new floors, solid walls, a sturdy new roof. Everything is brand new, but the building used to be in bad shape.
Gary Labeth with the Wilson Chamber says, "This building is the Lee building. It was once a five and dime building in Wilson, many years ago this building had fallen into disrepair."
A leaky roof, walls and floors in shambles, the old building needed a breath of new life. So the city took over. Through city funds and help from a local lawmaker, the center got its long deserved makeover.
"The building was completely renovated. Funds provided by the McCrory Foundation and on a S.O.D.A. grant which was obtained by senator Johnny Crutchfield."
The 25,000 dollar grant was given by the Southern Oklahoma Development Authority to revive the building. City officials say the new roof can withstand 90 mph winds. However citizens say they’re just glad to have a meeting place of their own.
Felix Hernandez is a local resident. He says, "Its good to have a community center where families can come together for functions of family things they want to do."
Wilson Chamber Member Gary Labeth say that having a nice building available is great for the town and its citizens. “Everyone in town can rent this the school as a high school principal were going to rent the building to do banquets in."
Not only will the building be used for various functions, various social groups will use the center as their meeting place as well.
