ARDMORE, Okla. -- City leaders in Ardmore say the city lacks affordable housing for seniors. A Utah developer is hoping to change that.
The oldest Baby Boomers turn sixty this year, and officials predict that the lack of housing for seniors is only going to get worse.
On Monday night, Desert Ridge Capital Group is asking city commissioners to give them the go-ahead to build an apartment complex designed just for seniors.
It's about a $5 million investment for Desert Ridge.
Developers have purchased this empty lot on 4th Northwest between "G" and "H" Streets.
They're asking commissioners to rezone the area from commercial to residential for them to build a 40-unit complex with one and two bedroom apartments.
Currently, the Ardmore Village is the only retirement home available in town. In order to live there, singles must make less than $15,350 a year, and there's a year and a half waiting list.
Desert Ridge will fill that void by serving those who don't meet the income requirement.
"We could build a whole other Ardmore Village and fill it up tomorrow, no question. There's a need for this… if it's well kept up, I’m behind it," says Ardmore Village director Jessica Pfau.
Desert Ridge is also looking for tax credits from the Oklahoma Housing Finance Authority. Since the program is competitive, they're asking commissioners to approve a resolution showing their support.
Commissioners are set to talk about that at Monday night’s meeting at 7 o’clock at City Hall.
