Great Days of Service

SHERMAN -- Rain or shine, Sherman residents are rolling up their sleeves preparing to help others in projects across the city.

Although the Great Days of Service organizers planned their events months ago, they say their goal is to help as many people as possible including anyone affected by last week’s flooding.

Several churches and other community organizations are collecting canned foods for the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels. The pantries at both organizations are especially low right now.

Volunteers are also scheduled to do a variety of projects including home improvement, a reading program, nursing home visitation, and making baby gowns.

"The more you work in helping others in the community the stronger you feel about the community, it makes it a better community and people are investing in helping others," said Jim Pledger of First United Methodist Church in Sherman.

Event organizers say even if it rains, they'll work on projects indoors.
