Homes in Gainesville, Sherman and across North Texas suffered severe damage from the floods of two weeks ago, but there are some things FEMA officials say can mitigate future damages in these types of storms.
Besides having flood insurance, officials with the mitigation directorate at the federal emergency management agency say everything from elevating the home to simply elevating the air conditioner could reduce potential flooding after a storm.
FEMA is one of the organizations that helps victims recover. They break down recovery efforts into four different categories: flood proofing, relocation, elevation, and demolition.
Those methods are used to determine the future of the home. If the cost of repairs to the home are 50 percent more than the pre-disaster market value of the home if damages to home are under fifty percent.
Then simple repairs such as water tight seals along the windows could prevent the water from entering the home.
