Customers saving, utilities losing on water bills

GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- Area cities are seeing a loss in revenue from all the recent rain. Water utilities are mailing out lower bills, which means lower payments for customers.

After checking the figures, officials say Sherman is $600,000 in the red because people aren't watering their lawns. In Denison the loss is over $40,000 for the month of June, and city officials are predicting a higher short-fall for July.

The money generated by water bills goes to maintaining treatment plants as well as water lines. Officials say the losses will be offset by budget surpluses so costs won't have to be cut.

While utilities are hurting, customers are saving money.

Denison resident Betty Minyard says her water bill has been cut in half this summer.

"You know in the summer it usually gets up real high because you have to water so much. It will be over a hundred and something dollars. Ours isn’t that much. It's only about fifty-something dollars now," said Minyard.

Officials say the coming months are usually the hottest, bringing in the most revenue for the year.

They say they hope that money will get the city budgets back on track.

Give me a break. Sherman and the other cities who are worried about being in the red due to loss of water revenue need to get their heads out of the sand. Water is a finite resource and will be one of our biggest problems in years to come. Counting on revenue from people watering their lawns is criminally stupid.

6000,000 in red, yeah, right. The water department in Sherman has lots of money in the general fund so I don't think that this is a true statement. They are just not getting as much money as they want at this time of year.
