Durant teachers gets schooled on substance abuse

DURANT, Okla. – The Durant Public Schools teamed up with the Durant Police Department to raise awareness of drugs and alcohol.

Throughout the year, the police department teaches students the effects drugs and alcohol can have on them.

On Tuesday, it was the teachers’ turn to learn.

About twenty middle school teachers showed up to the Kiamichi Vo-Tec facility for an education in substance abuse.

They learned about growing trends in the community, drug abuse, and even tried their hands at driving with DUI goggles on.

“I feel to improve safety for our students if we were able to identify and understand drugs within our community, because we are able to keep those out of the school system," said director of Safe Schools Greg Howse.

This is part of the Durant Public Schools summer teacher training.
