The plan to save old DHS

DENISON, Tex.-- Around 24 hours remain to stop the demolition of the old Denison High School. First News reporter Emi FitzGerald was in Denison on Thursday for a sneak peek at what some hope could be the future of the school.

For months crews have cleared other wings of the old high school, leaving the original structure.

Now those who want to see this building stand for many years to come have come up with plans for what they say this area could look like.

They're calling it the ‘Yellow Rose of Texas’, and its plans were dreamed up in the past ten days by a handful of people.

They hope to use the amphitheater on the west end of the building.

Two weeks ago one resident paid the City of Denison $10,000 to delay the demolition. The city granted him more time to raise funds and create plans for the building.

Those against the demolition say the first phase is to improve the curb appeal of the building at a price tag of about $1.5 million.

"We’re ready to go. We're raising funds. We’re well on our way to have the funds raised so we can make this a reality immediately. Everybody's tired of talking about it. We're ready to make it happen," says Michelle Castle of Save Denison History.

These residents say they have about $105,000 in the bank that they have raised just in the past week and a half, not including other money already in the trust fund.

On Friday night, they hope to rally more support at a sock hop fundraiser at Watson’s Drive-In on Main Street and then plan to present their ideas to the city council on Monday.

How about Red Rose of Texas (on the Red River, building has sort of red roof)

The "yellow Rose of Texas" is a great name for old DHS. San Antonio has tha Alamo on the Rio Grand, why can't we have the "Yellow Rose of Texas" on the Red River. As for the Linda comment, the shool looks like a dozen little Alamos, I guess that does smack of San Antonio. As for the strip club comment, they are named simply Yellow Rose, not the "Yellow Rose of Texas".I personally can't think of any historical structure in the State of Texas that this name would be better suited for than the yellow bricked old, DHS. What a great idea for marketing the city of Denison to the State of Texas.

Yellow Rose is a good name; however, it reminds me of San Antonio a little bit. Maybe come up with a historical name related to the building's origin.

Great. They are going to name the building after every strip club in Texas. Might want to come up with another name. On the other hand people would come and visit if it was a strip club.
