Sherman intersection causing concern

SHERMAN -- A dangerous intersection in Sherman continues to cause concern for residents. Now they want something done about it.

The intersection of Lamar and Grand in Sherman has seen its fair share of accidents, many of which have been witnessed by nearby residents, but after years of worry, changes may be in store.

Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation say they recently discussed the intersection and what can be done to reduce the risk of accidents.

Over the past year, Sherman police officials say there have been 15 accidents at the intersection, which features a pair of stop signs on grand and blinking yellow caution lights on Lamar.

But officials with TXDOT say in order to add a stop light, the intersection must warrant a signal. That’s a decision which has not yet been made.

"We’ll probably take a look at it again after the Austin College traffic picks up again. We look at it to see what the accident history is and what the traffic outs are to see if it warrants a signal." said TXDOT area engineer Kevin Harris.

The next study to be conducted on the intersection will take place sometime in November.

Well at 6:45 tonight there was yet another wreck at this corner. The person on grand just didn't see the van on lamar and pulled out right in front of him. They took out all but one sign in the median and now our one way sign is so bent up you can't even really read it. The city pulled it back up but that's not much help. Even worse, the person who caused the wreck has no insurance. Their car is a total wreck and the van was in really bad shape too. Thank goodness they only had a few scratches on them. That's a good idea I believe I will write our Congressmen and our Senator, something has to be done.

Grand and Houston has a light! The traffic coming out Lamar is too fast and people on Grand think they can go or don't pay attention. Contact your Congressmen and Senators and put some pressure on these "local" authorities. East Sherman does not get the same attention as other parts of the town! Wonder why?

Do we have to wait til there's a fatal accident before they will definately put up a stop light?

I can tell you there have been more than 15 wrecks in the past year. The reason the number that they have recorded is so low is because there are several here that people never report. Just 3 days ago there was a wreck here and when I went to see if they were alright they were just about to drive off. Come to find out neither vehicle had insurance so they decided not to report it. I know I have personally seen 3 wrecks here in the past 6 months that were never reported. I have been tempted to call them in anyway but I just don't know if it's my place to do.

This intersection, like north Travis St., got overlooked during the great city council spend-o-rama. But then again, a light at this intersection (or widening north Travis), won't benefit one of our local developers.
