DENISON, Tex.--The city of Denison is working to keep butts off the street. Cigarette butts, that is. Keep Denison Beautiful received a grant to place cigarette urns around town in places like Heritage Park, city hall, and the police station.
Officials say the butts account for about a third of all litter, and it's hard for clean-up crews to pick them all up.
"You go by picking up litter and you see so many cigarette butts, it's frustrating because you can't attack the problem. You can't go pick up that many," said Mike Scully, Keep Denison Beautiful chairman.
City leaders say the urns are on order and they hope to install them soon. Keep America Beautiful, a national anti-littering organization, awarded the $2500 grant to Denison. The award also includes 1000 pocket ash trays for residents. Anyone interested can contact Denison city hall at 903-465-2720.
