Getting rid of the butts

DENISON, Tex.--The city of Denison is working to keep butts off the street. Cigarette butts, that is. Keep Denison Beautiful received a grant to place cigarette urns around town in places like Heritage Park, city hall, and the police station.

Officials say the butts account for about a third of all litter, and it's hard for clean-up crews to pick them all up.

"You go by picking up litter and you see so many cigarette butts, it's frustrating because you can't attack the problem. You can't go pick up that many," said Mike Scully, Keep Denison Beautiful chairman.

City leaders say the urns are on order and they hope to install them soon. Keep America Beautiful, a national anti-littering organization, awarded the $2500 grant to Denison. The award also includes 1000 pocket ash trays for residents. Anyone interested can contact Denison city hall at 903-465-2720.

ciggarette butts are a health, hygiene, and esthetic issue. is there not a no littering regulation in denison ? Denison is in texas, yes. Why is, Who is not inforcing that ? the citizens are who pays for whose filth to be cleaned up. policing those who do not clean up after their own habits, including cigarettes, should be given a higher priority. when did persona; responsibility die.

Now we need something for people to throw all their other trash in. Every week I pick up trash, beer cans/bottles thrown out near my house. It's a good idea but honestly it is just the tip of the iceberg I'm afraid in this city.

Something is really wrong here. Our tax money is being distributed to agencies who give it to municipalites as grants to pick up the liter of their own citizens who apparently do not care about their own city ?? Seems like that ought to be the cities responsibility not the rest of the taxpayers in the Nation / State / County
