DURANT, Okla. --The Bryan County Jail that's been the center at so much negative attention in southern Oklahoma has been an ongoing challenge for county commissioners. On Monday afternoon, commissioners presented new budget proposal that would give the facility significantly more funding.
Bryan County leaders are one step closer to their new budget. On Monday, county commissioners presented the new fiscal year budget to the excise board for approval.
Of course, with numerous escapes, personnel issues, and a crumbling facility, this is a closely-watched meeting in Bryan County.
The budget includes three times as much funding for the county jail and more funding for the sheriff's office and road improvements.
County leaders say since voters passed the sales tax extension they were able to allocate funds initially used to pay bank loans for other county departments instead.
The funds will be released after a 15-day protest period.
