DURANT, Okla. --The Bryan County Jail that's been the center at so much negative attention in southern Oklahoma has been an ongoing challenge for county commissioners. On Monday afternoon, commissioners presented new budget proposal that would give the facility significantly more funding.

Bryan County leaders are one step closer to their new budget. On Monday, county commissioners presented the new fiscal year budget to the excise board for approval.

Of course, with numerous escapes, personnel issues, and a crumbling facility, this is a closely-watched meeting in Bryan County.

The budget includes three times as much funding for the county jail and more funding for the sheriff's office and road improvements.

County leaders say since voters passed the sales tax extension they were able to allocate funds initially used to pay bank loans for other county departments instead.

The funds will be released after a 15-day protest period.

let he has not sinned cast the first stone. We need a secure jail, we need well trained and paid employees, and we need to have love and compassion for people who have made mistakes. They deserve consequences but at the same time, just think how you would want to be treated if you were the one in jail.

yes, i spent time in bryan county jail and when it came time to go to court the da dropped all charges. What do you call a decent meal breakfast oatmeal (no milk, no sugar, no toast,) lunch (corndog bites mixed vegetables (no seasoning) dinner mac and cheese to wash that yummy food down with hot tap water weak tea no sugar. yep all you good law abiding citizens should thank god that you do not get on the wrong side of the cell even if you have done nothing wrong. stay in a dungeon and then the da don't have any charges against you. All of you should just take the time to check out the bryan county jail. I'm not saying that some of the people don't need to be there, but even if they do they still deserve to be treated like humans.

I could care less about the comfort of the prisoners. I'd like to see a security facility SECURE. This place has been a joke for a long time. For the safety of the public we all hope they "get it together". As far as the house guest? Let them sleep in tents for all I care. This ain't Club Med!

Anonymous in Durant you are so right. The "Humans" that break the law don't need for the tax payers of Bryan County to provide them with a Hyatt. They need to be punished. Arlene, I guess you have spent time in the BC jail to be in the know. And what do you call a decent meal? Do you want us to provide you and your cell mates with a top of the line steak or maybe lobster? Just fix the jail and hire some better guards and that should be enough. The criminals can just get over it. They can straighten out their lives if they want 5 star service and pay for it themselves.

If these HUMANS want all those rights you are talking about there is one sure way the can receive them...STOP BREAKING THE LAW!!!! As far as I am concerned the more miserable their stay the better. Maybe it will encourage them to, if nothing else commit their crimes in a county with better jails and my family and all the hard working tax payers in this county will be better off.

for those of us in the know about bryan county jail----we know that there will be no improvement but we can hope that they will get medicial attention for those in need these prisoners would just love to have a decent meal, a mattress to sleep on a blanket to cover up with a cold drink of water they don't want a sauna or an inside pool, some skylights to let in outside light would be wonderful. We can hope that the people in charge will check out some of the other county jails and see how HUMANS are suppose to be treated no matter what they have done these are HUMANS up there not animals.

Give them the money and lets see what they do with it. I am hoping that they will hire better guards and fix the jail and stop the escapes. Bryan county needs to get rid of the bad rep. I think it is time to make up for the wrongs that happened and get things set right.

Does this mean they will add valet parking with their already famous express check-out. That should make future guest of the Bryan County Jail very happy. I bet a sauna & indoor pool will soon be in the plan as well. What a place!!!
