FANNIN COUNTY, Tex. -- Seconds can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Now Fannin County responders may be able to quicken their response time, which could ultimately save lives.

Fannin County Sheriff Kenneth Moore says on any given day there are a hundreds of 911 calls coming in from as far east as Leonard to as far west as Honey Grove.

All of them go through the Bonham Proposed New Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). If the person calling is not located within the Bonham city limits, their call is transferred over to the sheriff's office.

It’s a chain of events which can delay response time.

On Monday morning, Judge Butch Henderson and county commissioners approved a resolution to create another PSAP at the sheriff's office so calls out in the county can be answered directly by county dispatchers.

Sherriff Moore says a second PSAP would cut down on emergency response time and provide a backup in case one of the systems fails because right now Fannin County’s back-up is Grayson County.

I have all the confidence in the world in the sheriff's office in Grayson County but if they have a disaster over there at the same time, something bad is happening over here in Fannin County, they're going to prioritize those calls,” says Sheriff Moore.

Thanks to an emergency services grant, the Texoma Council of Governments will help the county pay for the creation of the new PSAP, but county officials this is one step to much a bigger goal.

"We passed it with the intent of knowing we're still looking into the possibility of having a com center," said Judge Henderson.

Now it's up to the city of Bonham to approve the resolution as well. Judge Henderson says he doesn't anticipate any problems passing the PSAP since it would benefit everyone involved.

"It would be cutting down the load that we have to do, so I think it’s a step forward."
