ARDMORE, Okla. -- Officials from the Ardmore Development Authority (ADA) say the local economy is doing extremely well. That’s why more jobs are becoming available, but the population isn’t growing fast enough to fill those positions.
ADA officials are set to host a job fair next month at the convention center. Part of the challenge the city is facing is trying is to attract workers to the city to pursue a career.
Officials say there are reaching a 40-mile radius in hopes of attracting people to the area.
According to the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce, since 1997 the city has only experienced a 2 % growth in population.
It’s even affecting the city. With thirteen open positions- mostly for police officers- a job fair seems like a good idea.
"With what the economy is doing, what it’s creating, the companies are trying to hire more people," says ADA vice president Brien Thorstenberg.
The job fair takes place at the Ardmore Convention Center on September 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will be the second job fair for Ardmore.
"We’re competing for same candidates with every other organization. With our unemployment rate, it’s hard having ten jobs and only one person to fill it," says Leann Collins with the City of Ardmore’s human resources department..
Last year, 40 companies attended. Development officials expect to have more this year.
