Escapee Caught in Bryan CountyUPDATED

BRYAN COUNTY, Okla. -- An escapee is back behind bars after more than 36 hours on the loose in Bryan County. Officials say Andrew McCartney just walked out the unlocked front door, and a jailer is to blame.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, McCartney's mother called investigators early Saturday morning to arrange a meeting between officals and her son. McCartney was back in custody around 6:15.

McCartney was the first inmate to escape the Bryan County Jail in at least six months, but Sheriff Bill Sturch says this is one too many, and he's cracking down..

In this bizarre case the man out is an escaped inmate and the man in is the jailer who aided his escape.

On Thursday night around 9:25, Thomas Charles Williams III was working at the Bryan County Auxiliary Jail when Andrew McCartney, 22, escaped.

Escaping a jail is something you would think of as a challenge, but for McCartney it was as simple as walking through three doorways.

In fact, McCartney just walked out the unlocked front door.

Sheriff Strurch says this is unacceptable, and now that the jail is back in his hands he says he's ‘cracking down.’

Right now the jailer, who was hired on the August 13, is behind bars charged with delivering contraband into penal institution (a felony) as well as aiding-allowing an escape.

Sheriff Sturch later said the 'contraband' was alcohol.

Some people speak before they think! I wounder why? A few of the writers as you can tell, have little thought process. They use others to fuel their own need to feel important, and they also have a big problem with self respect. I wounder why? The way to solve the problem of small minds is to let it continue with it's thought process, soon that small mind will fade away. I hope that the small minded people who take the time to spit into the wind, take time to close their eyes. Remember, that before you engage into conversation with others on any topic, you need fact not fiction. To the few with small minds, you will never grow and you will continue with your lack of respect for yourself. Do you wounder why your life isn't anywhere?

Jennifer: I was paying attention to what you wrote. However, I wasn't sure you were telling the whole truth. The Jennifer I am talking about was given the option to quit or be fired so apparently she quit. Your story sounds identical to the Jennifer I am talking about.

I THINK THIS BLOG IS TAKING A TURN IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. IT'S POST YOUR COMMENTS: NOT YOU OPINIONS, NOT YOUR SARCASTIC REMARKS, YOUR COMMENTS AS TO THE STORY. IF THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT RUNS LIKE THIS BLOG NO WONDER WHY IT'S SO SCREWED UP. AS TO ANSWER IN DURANT: YES MOST PLACES GIVE 90 DAY TRAINING. HOWEVER, SCREW UP IN THE FIRST 90 DAYS AND SEE IF YOU KEEP THAT JOB. DUH! WHAT THE JAILER DID WAS TOTAL DISREGARD OF THE RULES AND SECURITY NOT BECAUSE HE WASN'T TRAINED PROPERLY, BECAUSE HE WANTED TO: PLAIN AND SIMPLE. HIS ACTIONS BROUGHT ABOUT THE EVENT. EVEN AN IDIOT WOULD REALIZE THAT. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH TRAINING, PAY, ETC. HE CHOSE TO PERFORM THESE ACTS ON HIS OWN. TO BE QUITE FRANK, I THINK THE D.A. SHOULD HAVE FILED CHARGES ON ALL THE JAILERS THAT ALLOWED ESCAPES, MAYBE THEN, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE HAD SO MANY. AS FOR STURCH BEING REPLACED WHY WAS HE ELECTED AND RE-ELECTED SO MANY TIMES?. LET'S START THINKING OUT OUR COMMENTS BEFORE YOU BLOW AND GO, YOUR ONLY SHOWING YOUR STUPIDIT

Response to DP. Sorry but you most definetly have me confused with another Jennifer because I was never fired and have never been fired from any job I have ever had. So sorry you have the wrong person.I advised why I was unable to go back to work if you would have been paying attention when reading my comment you would have read that.

hey me, are you the new black investigator that the sheriff just hired because he has to meet state requirements? Jennifer, when does a hand book train someone on the job. when does a hand book tell someone (black or white)that has been on a job for 13 days what to do if he is there alone, most jobs give a 90 day training period to all employees before they are held accountable for their mistakes. It is the supervisor that needs to be on the job making sure that his new employees are being properly trained in all areas of the job.

Jennifer: I am wondering if this is the same Jennifer that worked for the county twice. The reason she no longer works there is because she was fired by the jail authority. She has bad feelings towards the jail authority but still loves Sturch because he didn't fire her. She was doing whatever she wanted when she wanted and was not a good employee. No wonder she loved Sheriff Sturch so much; he let her do what she wanted until the jail authority fired her.

Dan: You say to quit playing the blame game, then you go on to gripe about Dewayne Simpson. You need to practice what you preach!!

Response to Arkie1947:At what time in my comment did you see that I stated that the Admin. was my father and a close friend to Sturch? Thank goodness we do not have you running anything in our City or County, or do we?Because it is people like you that make things up and twist it in a different direction and do we really need that? And by State law all jails have to have a policy and procedure manuel available for employes to read and follow and I know for a fact this jail had one so it is the jailers fault and he should be incarcerated for not following it.He knew that all inmates especially with the charges this one had on him that he was not to be out of his cell for any reason accept to go to court, he disobeyed the policy and should be held accountable for his actions.

Response to Wonder Why: I would love to go back to work under Sturch if I could but because of an injury my Doctor said that I am no longer able to work in that profession.I quit the first time after 2 years to go to college full time and then went back.I went back to work there and had no idea that the old Commissioners were going to take the jail away from Sturch because they thought they could run it better and that was the biggest mess I had ever seen they refused to help when needed or come when called on for help. They told us on more than one occassion not to go to Sturch for any reason and everytime you turned around they were backstabbing Sturch to the fullest,I thought this to be total B.S.I ended up injured and unable to return to that position and was extreamly happy because at the way things were going at the jail with them in charge I was afraid of what was going to happen with them in charge so thank goodness I got out of there before it became worse.
