SHERMAN, Tex. -- Accused murderer Michael Kimmel has received a life sentence for a drug charge. A judge handed down an unusually harsh sentence for the crime. We spoke with the prosecutor to find out why.

She says she has never asked for a life sentence for a drug charge in her 17-year career, but says in the case of Michael Kimmel, the punishment fits the crime.

Prosecutors say Kimmel shot and killed Gerry White at the Brooks Manor apartment complex in Sherman back in 2005. Kimmel was on the run for months, even sent a confession letter to KXII-TV before being arrested and charged with murder.

Authorities say Kimmel was a crypts gang member from Fort Worth and came up to Sherman for a drug deal that turned deadly. His drug possession charges were enhanced because the incident was within a drug free zone: across the street from Piner Middle School and a day care.

"He's a very dangerous, violent human being. He's only 23 years of age and he's been in the system since he was 10," says Bobbie
Peterson-Cate, a special contract prosecutor for Grayson County.

Peterson-Cate says Kimmel will be eligible for parole in 30 years. Kimmel is still awaiting his trial for murder. If convicted of that crime as well, he will have to serve any other sentence back-to-back.

OKAY! Everyone thinks we should give young black men a second chance, yeah rite, give me a break people, everyone needs to quit makeing excuses for their actions,oh boo hoo hoo he was just a poor black kid growing up in the hood,he knew that what he was doing was wrong to begin with, and to make matters worse blacks always want to point the finger at white people for the things that happen to them, well guess what?IT'S NOT OUR FAULT YOUNG BLACKMEN CAN'T GET THEIR LIFE IN ORDER,IT'S NOT US THAT MAKE THEM JOIN GANGS AND SELL DRUGS,THESE ARE THE CHOICES THEY MADE AND NOW THEY MUST SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES,and it's not like I care that their killing eachother off and going to prison,it's the fact that blacks in general are blameing whites for the bad choices that young blackmen made strictly on their own,I realy don't care what black people do as long as they keep doing it to themselves and leave white people alone.

To "Fed Up": You showed your ignorance in your comment. Why don't you come visit the felony courts? You'd be very surprized at the number of young white males and females causing loads of problems in this area. By the way, Texas does not execute people on drug cases. In case you missed it, this case was only the drug charge. The murder case is still pending.

What does race have to do with anything? Screw-ups come in all kinds of different colors. My personal opinion is that old, rich, white men seem to be causing more harm to society than anyone else.

So there are no young angry white men? This last comment was a real winner.

Enough. Keep him locked up. Or give him the death sentence. Young angry black men are the most detrimental thing in our society. How did this get so out of hand. MLK is probably spinning in his grave! All he did for peace and empowering black people is going to go to waste! Black men, stop the killing, drugging, pimping and take care of your children!
