Fannin Co. highway renamed to honor Sam Rayburn

FANNIN COUNTY, Tex. -- A new addition to Highway 121 in will now be a memorial to former Speaker of the House and Bonham native Sam Rayburn.

A twenty-six mile stretch of roadway will now be called the ‘Sam Rayburn Memorial Highway’. It stretches from north of Bonham from Highway 78 all the way to Trenton.

Signs will be placed along the route to show appreciation for the man who grew up in Fannin County.

"I’m a native of Fannin County. I grew up in the 50's and 60's. It was Sam Rayburn. We've got the Sam Rayburn House, and one of the claims to fame here is Sam Rayburn."

This is at least the second stretch of area highways named for the late Speaker of the House. Highway 75 in Sherman is also known as the Sam Rayburn Freeway.
