Chickasaw Nation approves raise for Anoatubby

ADA, Okla. -- On Friday, Chickasaw legislators voted on a $200,000 raise for Governor Bill Anoatubby that will bring his salary to more than that of President Bush.

Tribal members spoke out Tuesday against the proposal, saying that if the Chickasaw tribal government has this much money to hand out, they should put it back into the hands of the Chickasaw people

Governor Anoatubby will make more thn $500,000 a year.

Tribal legislators say the Governor's service warrants the raise.

"I feel he has earned every penny, but I think the position deserves it as well. It's an enormous position," said Tribal Legislator Linda Briggs.

Legislators are also considering a 30% increase in Governor Anoatubby's retirement budget.

By the end of 2009, he could me making more than $700,000 annually.

They also agreed to give him more in his retirement salary, but Chickasaw lawmakers voted against giving themselves a raise.

Of course there's debate on this money issue. Some in the Chickasaw Nation say that money should go back to programs for the Chickasaw people.
