Ada City Council approves amendments to tobacco and e-cigarette ordinance

ADA, OK -- Tonight Ada City Council members unanimously voted to amend their tobacco and e-cigarette ordinance.

The ordinance already prohibited the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes to minors, now it prohibits the distribution of such products on any public street, sidewalk, or park within 300 feet of any school or facility that's used primarily for anyone under 18.

City officials say it's important to limit the exposure to the younger generation.

"It's alarming the number of youth, even in junior high, that have tried e-cigarettes, and so we think it's important to limit that at this time until there's more research or regulation on what is in them," said City Attorney, Frank Stout.

Stout says this ordinance does not apply to retail shops like convenience stores that are near schools.

The ordinance will go into effect immediately.
