Tuesday evening the Ardmore School Board held a special meeting prior to it's regular meeting. In the special meeting, the board unanimously approved an election for a $31 million dollar school bond.
"It's a really good thing," said Preston Jefferson, who has three kids in Ardmore schools. "I'm all for it being a parent and working in Ardmore."
The proposed bond would pay for a new Lincoln Elementary school, nine new classrooms at Jefferson Elementary and a new roof for Ardmore Middle School among other improvements.
Superintendent Sonny Bates said the district's financial advisor will now file with the election board for a vote on May 14th.
"Has a little bit more paperwork to do, that type of thing, and to put it all together to get it ready to post by first thing tomorrow morning," said Bates.
In the regular board meeting the CEO of the University Center of Southern Oklahoma spoke about expansion plans. They would like to build two new buildings at the University Center in two different phases.
Phase one would include a new building for health, science and math.
"I think it's a good idea because if they're going to add labs and add more course opportunities that's really phenomenal," said Ashton Talmage, a UCSO student.
The building would cost an estimated $17 million dollars, money the CEO says won't come from public funds.
"Not on this first building, we're hoping, planning to do it without any," said Dr. Steve Mills, CEO of the University Center. "Just through our fundraising efforts."
Phase I construction won't begin until the funds are in hand, which officials hope to start this fall.
Phase II is still in the planning stages, but no timetable is set.
