(BONHAM, TEXAS) -- The Bonham fire station has been standing since 1954 and hasn't had a single renovation..until now. Firefighters say they're looking forward to a 21st century facility.
Chief Brad Nichols says "I'm very excited..I started at this station when I was a rookie firefighter and to see the improvements and still be able to keep the history of the fire station itself."
Firefighter David Hale says "it's gonna be a big improvement to the department..a better image..get rid of the old stuff and bring some new stuff into the new century."
The firefighters are lending their own hands to complete a lot of the renovations themselves, they say knowing they've contributed their own sweat and time makes their new home feel a little sweeter.
Firefighter Travis Baca, " feels good that we can leave our mark on the station."
Firefighter Colby Rogers " this is our home..so making it how we want it pretty important to us."
By completing the renovations themselves the fire department has been able to keep the cost under $250,000 which will save the city $500,000, something they are proud to do.
Chief Nichols, " for them to pitch in and do this work and save the citizens their tax dollars."
Colby Rogers, " it's a small town so it's nice to help out when we can kinda takes off the expenses of labor."
The entire interior of the station is being renovated to ensure the station is up to par with current safety codes, renovations will include a sprinkler system in the kitchen, 9 individual bedrooms, and five large fire truck bays to accommodate the new fire trucks which are larger than older models.
Nichols says,"figure with this refurbishment we'll be able to stay here for another 60 years and beyond.
