ADA, OK -- This week is National Prevention Week and is dedicated to promoting awareness and education on prevention of substance abuse.
Holli Witherington, Executive Director of ECU's Brandon Whitten Institute for Addiction and Recovery, says Oklahoma ranks the highest in overdose deaths caused by prescription drug abuse.
She says pain medications such as oxycontin and hydrocodone...and stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin are very common prescription drugs that are abused.
Witherington says addiction is very serious and those suffering should seek help.
"Addiction is a disease of the brain," said Witherington. "So first of all we want everyone to realize it's a disease and it needs to be treated as such. There are certain treatment things that we recommend, but most importantly, take that first step and admitting they need help and getting them into a treatment center."
