GRAYSON COUNTY, TEXAS -- FM 691 and Highway 75 has become one of Texoma's busiest intersections.
Tuesday morning, Grayson County Commissioners approved a resolution allowing TXDOT to widen 691, from Highway 91 to FM 131.
"TXDOT didn't have enough money in their budget to complete the entire project, so the county voted last budget session to appropriate $500,000," County Judge Drue Bynum said.
Denison city leaders and commissioners collectively created a tax increment fund, so that the funds will replenish over time.
Bynum says this expansion will help alleviate traffic and encourage more business.
"One of the things that a developer always looks at is how am I going to move people in and out? Not only the staff that works there, but the people using the facilities," Bynum said.
Texoma Medical Center CEO Ron Seal says the hospital is currently 100 percent occupied -- and growing.
They've maxed out their parking lot and are adding 38 hospital beds and 60 new jobs in the fall.
"With the hospital expansions, as you see us having, that easier access will help everyone as they come here to the hospital," Seal said.
It's not just TMC that's booming on 691.
"The building right on the side of us, Cigna, too, has over 1,000 staff members there, as well," Seal said.
Not to mention the new hotel/convention center that'll soon go up across the highway.
Bynum says this widening is a move in the right direction.
"It's one of those things were truly, in some cases, if you build it, they will come, and truly, we're beginning to reap the benefits of that," Bynum said.
Tray Turner with TXDOT says they'll be taking bids for the construction in June or July.
He says 691 will be extended to four lanes from Highway 9 to FM 131.
