Howe police investigating alleged child abuse at daycare

HOWE, TX -- Howe police are investigating, what they say, is child abuse at a local daycare.

Howe police say two 3-year-old children are bruised after an 18-year-old female employee of School Zone Academy allegedly picked them up forcefully and dropped them. Officers say they began investigating when a grandmother came forward claiming she watched the daycare worker pick up her grandchild by the arm then drop the child onto a mat at naptime.

"She observed one of the employees mishandling her grandchild. The allegation was that the child was physically mishandled; forcefully put down to go to sleep," Chief Carl Hudman said.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the daycare and say they saw that same employee take similar action with a second child.

"There was evidence of physical abuse," Hudman said.

We reached out to School Zone Academy owner Kathleen Todd, who declined comment. Hudman says this is the first complaint they have taken about the daycare and says that the suspect, who is currently suspended from her job, is cooperating with their investigation.

"I know that she's not actively working at the daycare," Hudman said.

Hudman says the suspect could face two charges of injury to a child.
