DURANT, OK -- The Durant Regional Airport continues to expand.
Tuesday, city council members approved the lease of 16 lots at the airport that will be used for the development of private hangers.
Council members also approved a bid for runway expansion.
Project Director, Jerry Yandell, says they're asking the FAA to approve and help fund expansion to the 5,000 foot runway -- adding another 1,000 feet.
Yandell says they've seen an increase in larger jets coming to the airport.
"Based on the size of the plane that they're in, it makes them too heavy to get out of a shorter runway. They need a larger runway to get the lift that they need to get out of here," Yandell said.
Airport officials say it could be up to a year before they'll have an answer from the FAA.
