SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Slides and ladders and monkey bars were installed today as part of the City of Sherman's neighborhood revitalization.

"We're doing some rehab on Fielder Park. That's the area that we chose as the pilot project," Kevin Winkler with Parks and Rec said.

The decades-old park is also getting new benches, an updated pavilion, extended sidewalks, a fountain and a basketball court.

Winkler says their goal is to give the area a facelift and help spur residents to keep it maintained.

"To make them feel a part of that neighborhood, make them want to maybe clean up around their house and do those sort of things that will, overall, help everybody in the neighborhood," Winkler said.

The playground is designed to strengthen muscles in children. Creighton Williams with Parks for Play says these kinds of exercise playgrounds are a new trend.

"It's like an exercise station for fundamental strength," Creighton Williams said.

Winkler says the park renovations should be complete by the time school's out for summer, and depending on its success with kids and community members, the city could choose to revitalize more parks.

"We'll evaluate and see if it's something we'd like to continue in the future if money allows," Winkler said.
