GAINESVILLE, TX -- The city of Gainesville could see some more economic growth in the the near future.
The Gainesville Economic Development Corporation has been looking to buy more land for over a year for a new industrial park. They've narrowed down a spot behind the outlet mall and believe it's unique location will draw some large businesses to the area.
The city of Gainesville has seen an influx of large businesses.
"We've seen tremendous growth," GEDC director, Kent Sharp, said.
Gainesville Economic Development Director, Kent Sharp, and the rest of the board, want that growth to continue, but they ran into a problem.
"Gainesville Economic Development Corporation is out of land to present to potential industries and manufacturers that say 'hey, we'd like to come to your town. You know, show us what you've got," Sharp said.
So, they recently announced the purchase of 140 acres of land that will be able to house large manufacturing companies, which will mean more jobs and more people.
"Anything that brings industry into Gainesville will help Gainesville. It will help jobs. There will be opportunities that some people might not have," resident Luann Shortnacy said.
"I think it would help the community out a lot. It needs to be renovated and it needs to have newer things," resident Brandon Carr said.
This won't be your average industrial park. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad has a track right next to the land. Sharp says the plan is to add a spur, so the new companies will have direct access to the railroad.
Sharp says a rail serviced industrial park is hard to come by in North Texas. So, he believes these tracks will attract large corporations.
"When companies that do need that rail access call around, we feel like we'll have a leg up," he said.
Sharp says just in the last year they've seen at least one major prospect a month that is looking to establish a manufacturing facility. So, they have high hopes the park will fill up quickly.
