GAINESVILLE, TX -- Native Americans from all over met in Gainesville today for a powwow all for a good cause.
It's the fourth annual Gainesville Student Benefit Powwow. Native Americans from many tribes are dancing and singing, and several vendors are on hand, selling hand crafted items and food as well.
All money raised will go towards scholarships for Gainesville ISD Native American students. Organizers say not only is the event great for the students, but it also allows others to come and learn about their culture.
"Not really a lot of Native people around here. It gives outsiders a chance to see, you know, what it's like you know to go to powwows," organizer Travis Davis said.
"To me the most important thing is teaching the community around us and the kids in our schools about true Native American culture," organizer Mark Higgins said.
The event is going on until 10:00 p.m. Saturday night. It's being held in the Gainesville High School gym and cafeteria.
