SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Sherman's two candidates for mayor stepped into the spotlight Tuesday, promoting their platforms at a downtown meeting.
"Running for mayor would give me the opportunity to really have a voice, to lead Sherman, to provide a vision for this community," Cary Wacker said.
"I think it's important to continue that momentum into the future, to continue to make Sherman a great place to live and raise a family," Willie Steele said.
Deputy Mayor Willie Steele and Councilmember At-Large Cary Wacker have both lived in Sherman for three decades.
Wacker has served as Main Street Manager and the Environmental Education Coordinator.
Steele has served as Planning and Zoning Chairman and a member of the Keep Sherman Beautiful Commission.
Their goals?
"To look to and recruit small businesses," Steele said.
Steele also wants to revitalize downtown and maintain the city's great family atmosphere.
Wacker wants safer neighborhoods, a more diverse economic base and regional recognition.
"To make the most of the resources we have and really put Sherman on the map," Wacker said.
Both candidates highlighted the importance of downtown.
"It's really important to be here to support the continued revitalization of downtown," Wacker said.
"This is the vital part of our town and it needs to be the center and everything needs to spread out from the center of our downtown," Steele said.
In the race for At-Large Place 1 is Steve Jonse and Ryan Johnson.
Jason Sofey is running unopposed for At-Large Place 2.
Sherman's current mayor, Bill Magers, has reached his term limit and is stepping down in November.
The election is November 6th.
