UPDATE: Girl who shot herself outside Silo school dies

SILO, OKLAHOMA -- Bryan Co. Sheriff Ken Golden confirms today that the female Silo student, who shot herself inside her father's truck in the school parking lot Monday, died Monday at Parkland hospital.

Before today, the sheriff's office believed her to be a 7th grader. Today, we received confirmation from Silo Superintendent Bill Caruthers that she was a 9th grader.

Golden confirms that she shot herself in the head with a small caliber revolver that belongs to her father. He says that her father is an employee at Silo schools.

Golden says this was an isolated incident and no students were in the vicinity when the shot was fired around 11 a.m. He adds that everyone, including staff, faculty and students, were safe.

"There wasn't anyone else involved. This was one person," Golden said.

Golden says Silo schools went on lockdown immediately after the incident. The lockdown was lifted around 12:30 p.m. Golden says law enforcement will remain on scene the next couple of hours.

Parents were told to pick up their children at the back side of the cafeteria.

A Bryan County investigator at the scene says the school district handled the situation appropriately.
