VAN ALSTYNE, TX---While several National Night Out events in our area were rescheduled due to heat, the cities of Van Alstyne and Tishomingo held their events Tuesday evening.

The heat didn't keep hundreds of Van Alstyne residents from coming out to meet their neighbors, public officials, Van Alstyne police, firefighters, and even representatives of the local electric company were on hand.

They were all there to meet area neighbors and answer any questions they might have.
Police say getting out and meeting other people in the community creates a collective effort to fight crime.

They say national night out really works because when you know your neighbors, you know who belongs and who doesn't.
Besides helping to cut down on crime, tonight's event gave residents the opportunity to ask basic safety questions to the Grayson Collin Electric Co-Op.

With the rising cost of electric service, many people say they're not able to pay their bills---a dangerous situation in our current heat wave.
