SHERMAN, Tex. - Saluting those who've gone above and beyond to serve their community is the mission of a new initiative here at KXII-TV. Throughout the month of April, you've seen Dr. Oscar Page featured as a Texoma Legend.

“Higher education is a great gift to the community, it is the way people create mobility for themselves in life,” says Austin College president Oscar Page.

Oscar Page claims he may not be an expert on higher education, but he has been in the business a long time. As far as presidential tenures go, he's been at the helm of Austin College for a long time. 14 years so far. But of all the credit that might be given to Page during his time here, he says is not his doing.

“Not the result of Oscar Page, it's the result of the community,” says Page.

He's set to retire more than a year from now, plenty of time for board members to find his successor, whom might hear these words of advice.

Be very conscious of the people around you, listen to what they're saying,” says Page. “Get to know the community and help the community understand our students, faculty, and college programs.”

Words of wisdom from someone credited with helping to grow the prosperous North Texas institution that's known as Austin College.

If you have never heard of Dr Page or Austin College you must be living in a different area than the Texoma Area as he is a great man and Austin College is a great school. It has brought lots of money to this area as the students that enroll there and live there while going to a great college spend lots of money in texoma, wake up people of Texoma, Austin College is a very high ranking college for education and many of those students reside in the texoma area, make lots of money from having degrees from Austin college and spend lots of money in the Texoma area.

Dr. Page must be a legend in his own mind, because I have never heard of him. If he was truely a TEXOMA LEGEND wouldn't that include recognition from the surrounding communities as well? Good job KXII for picking someone that really should not have qualified (were you desperate). I agree with Mr. Harrison, poor work was involved in your selection! How is helping Austin College helping the Texoma area? Lucy...you got some spaillin' to do....

I have enjoyed the Texoma Legends series on Dr. Oscar Page. I have called Oscar a friend since he arrived at Austin College and can testify to his devotion to the college and the community. I think Oscar's legacy to Grayson County will be, in a large part, that he brought the college and the community together in a way that has paid dividends for all. Serving the community and giving his time to many local organizations is a clear sign that the college isn't just about 900 N. Grand Avenue. And what local organization, or mother of the bride, doesn't consider the Wright Center when planning a social/community event or wedding? And then there is Oscar's wife Anna Laura, the story could never be complete without her chapters. Her steadfast devotion to the college and the community has been demonstrated time after time and her national prominence in the field of music is a matter of pride for us all. I know we all wish the Page's well in their next endeavor.

It really disappoints me that Dr Page would be selected by KXII as someone you selected as a Texoma Legend. Dr. Page isn't from Texoma and he's only been here a little over 10 years. His own bio indicates his speciality is "fund raising", and he has done that... For Austin College, not Texoma. He's not involved in our community, he helped to take MILLIONS of dollars in taxable property off the Grayson County Tax Rolls, and he hasn't done ANYTHING to warrant being called a Texoma Legend. There are dozens of real 'Texoma Legends' in Grayson County and the Texoma area. School teachers, police officers, fire/ems personnel, community volunteers, etc. that could certainly qualify for such an award. I would expect such 'news' from the Herald-Democrat as they are inheriently a 'liberal' newspaper. But, again, I'm disappointed in Channel 12 in honoring Dr. Page as a 'legend'.
