Fright Fest 2008
October 31

Once again the Sherman Police Department is getting ready for the Halloween activity we named Fright Fest. In case you don’t know, Fright Fest is a Halloween event sponsored by the Sherman Police Department that offers kids and parents a safe, controlled environment in which to trick-or-treat. It was started after the attacks on 9-11 to give parents a feeling of security.

Basically, contact is made with as many businesses, government agencies, church groups, and other organizations as possible and arrange for them to set up a booth and hand out candy. The event is held at the municipal grounds. There is no fee charged to the groups to set up and they are allowed to advertise in any way they choose, all we ask is that they show up and bring a lot of candy to give away. In the past, participants have set up booths as simple as a card table and chair, to as elaborate as a haunted house build on site. The event usually draws anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 people from all over Grayson County.

We are in the process of getting groups to come out and set up. If your organization would like to participate please contact Sgt. Bruce Dawsey at 903-892-7365. No venders wishing to sell items during the event. This is a free event.

The event is scheduled for Halloween night October 31 on the municipal grounds from 6pm – 8:30pm. Set-up will be from 4:30pm – 5:30pm.

This is the only place me and my kids go each year. I would like to see it grow a bit more though. There's a ton of room there and it would be great for the whole thing to be packed with vendors. Better advertising might help that, but all in all we love it and the kids are glad it's there because without it we would just stay home.

I hate these so called safe events. It is just a place for advertisers to market to kids. It takes away from the neighborhoods. I can not afford 3000 peices of candy to come and participate. So I sit here at my house with no trick or treaters. It is a shame we let the criminals win. We need to stop this and grow our communities. If we got to know our nieghbors we would have less crime. Instead we are just making it so impersonal that it makes it easier for a stranger to be on my street. This is the worst idea I have ever heard of. It is bad enough we do not have front porches any more now this. Please give my neighbors back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
