CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - The mother of two children whose bodies were found stuffed under a San Antonio triplex has pleaded guilty today to capitol murder just before her trial was set to begin.
Valerie Lopez agreed to a plea deal yesterday that calls for her to serve life in prison without parole.
The bodies of Lopez's 1-year-old daughter and 4-month-old son were found in March 2007 stuffed under the couple's old home after neighbors reported a foul smell.
A spokesman for the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, Cliff Herberg, said Lopez agreed to cooperate in the prosecution of 29-year-old Jerry Salazar, a former boyfriend who also faces capitol murder charges.
The planned trial was moved to Nueces County because of the publicity surrounding the case.
The San Antonio Express-News reports District Attorney Susan Reed said that she had to be talked into the plea deal.
