8-30-05 - The man who went on a shooting rampage killing four people in Fannin County Sunday night is now dead. Sheriff Ken Moore announced the nine-hour standoff ended just after 6 a.m. Monday morning when the suspect shot himself in the head.
It is a tragedy virtually unheard of in a small Texoma town. The shootings began Sunday night after the evening church service at the Assembly of God in Sash, Texas, just north of Honey Grove.
Authorities say Fred Cranshaw got into some kind of verbal argument with a group of people standing outside the church. He came back with two guns, a .38 caliber handgun and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol
He shot and killed pastor James Armstrong, as well as deacon Ernest Wesley Brown. The shooter, who only had one arm, then drove north down FM 100. When he came to a stop sign, he shot at two women sitting in a pickup pulling a horse trailer. They tried to run, but Cranshaw gunned them down. 50-year-old Holly Love Brown of Greenville and Ceri Litterio died at the scene.
Authorities chased Crenshaw to his home, near FM 100 and FM 2216, where he kept them at bay throughout the night.
Law enforcement agencies from across the region are investigating several crime scenes, including the church and the suspect’s home.
Cranshaw is in his mid-fifties and lives near the church. Fannin county authorities say he has no criminal record, but they have been called by neighbors to the area of his home in recent months for disorderly conduct, but never to the extent that he was arrested.
A motive for the shootings is unclear.
