8-29-05 - An elderly Pontotoc County man was stung by over 100 bees on Sunday, but managed to escape and survive. Eighty-four-year-old Joe Daniel was fishing when the swarm descended on him.
He was fishing in a creek near his home in Stonewall when he pulled on a vine to stand up. He was immediately swarmed by bees, what he describes as a black cloud all around him. He finally had to crawl through a briar patch to get away.
A neighbor nearby rushed him to the hospital. They even found a few dead bees in his clothes. The sheriff's department isn't sure if the bees were Africanized, known as killers bees. The state agriculture department will find out for sure.
