Officer Injured in High Speed Chase

Video will be available shortly.

8-29-05 - A Sherman police officer was nearly run over by a suspected drunk driver during a short chase Friday night. It began at Lone Star Lanes on FAM 1417 after employees called 911 over a disturbance.

When officers arrived, they saw the suspect, 22-year-old Ryan Frank Willgues, sitting inside his car. But as they approached, he sped north of 1417 in the wrong lane with his headlights turned off.

Officers chased him for about a mile, until he pulled off the road in from of the Woodridge Apartments. At that point, both officers got out of the patrol car, but as they approached the suspect's vehicle, he drove in reverse and hit the patrol car. Officer John Kennemer jumped out of the way just in time, but suffered a leg injury.

Willgues sped away, but crashed his vehicle a short distance later at Washington Street.

Kennemer will recover from his injury. Willgues faces several felony charges.
