7-19-05 - WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush has nominated federal appeals court judge John Roberts for a seat on the Supreme Court.
In a prime-time announcement from the White House, Bush said Roberts is "one of the best legal minds of his generation." And Bush said Roberts "has devoted his entire professional life to the cause of justice."
Roberts, who stood with the president, said he has "a deep
regard for the court as an institution."
If confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, the 50-year-old Roberts would succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. She has long been a swing vote on a court divided narrowly on issues such as abortion, affirmative action, states' rights and the death penalty.
