A small group of students is coming down with a very contagious skin infection at Denison High School. Seven football players and one volleyball player have been diagnosed with a Staph infection known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus – or MRSA.
It’s highly contagious and tough to treat. Once confined to hospitals, MRSA is now making an appearance in locker rooms. School officials say they're taking extra precautions to keep those numbers down.
"We have a lot of issues with changing clothes and showering and things of that nature in this facility and we're taking great steps to make sure we disinfect and sanitize all the shower facilities and all the restroom facilities," says custodial supervisor Mark Owens.
MRSA shows up as a boil and if it goes un-treated, it could weaken the immune system, causing pneumonia or bloodstream infections and in very rare instances - death.
The 8 Denison students who contracted the infection this year have been treated and will be ok. In the meantime, the school is warning other players about MRSA. Health officials say students need to wash their hands often and cover cuts with bandages until they heal.
