9-1-05 - State Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan is calling for a special session of the Legislature to suspend gas taxes for the last three months of the year.
And Governor Henry says he's intrigued by the idea.
Morgan said today the state could take $103 million from the Rainy Day fund to pay for temporary elimination of gas and diesel taxes. Such a move would save Oklahomans 17 cents per gallon and the money from the Rainy Day fund would ensure there is no interruption of road and bridge maintenance.
And Morgan says if gas prices don't begin to fall significantly he'll sponsor legislation next year to suspend the state gas tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day every summer.
Henry says he hasn't had a chance to see details, but he wants to investigate the proposal to determine if it can legally be done.
