Hurricane Katrina Evacuees

9-19-05 - There are 16,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees staying in 145 shelters in Texas, according to the most recent figures from the state Division of Emergency Management. State officials say there may be as many as 375,000 evacuees in the state overall.

The largest numbers living in shelters were in:

HOUSTON

Reliant Arena: 1,499

George R. Brown Convention Center: 362

DALLAS/FORT WORTH

Reunion Arena and other shelters: 194

SAN ANTONIO

Former Kelly Air Force Base shelters: 3,086

Special needs shelters: 249
