9-21-05 - Hundreds of laborers at Weber Aircraft in Gainesville have been on strike since 5 a.m. Wednesday morning trying to get new contract negotiations. They say they are willing to stand out in the heat for as long as it takes to get what they want.
After two months of talks, Weber Aircraft and Teamsters Local 767 ended negotiations at 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Union workers say their problem is with the new contract that would allow Webber to outsource jobs, potentially leading to layoffs.
Over half of Weber's 750 laborers are union workers, and they say they are willing to go back to the table, but they don't want to be out of work for long.
"We're the ones that help make the money for the company," nine-year assembler Brenda Carson said.
We have repeatedly tried contacting Weber representatives to learn the circumstances surrounding the new contract, but supervisors and managers been in emergency planning meetings throughout Wednesday.
Weber Aircraft is the leading manufacturer of airplane seats. For the past 10 to 15 years, they have peacefully negotiated with the teamsters union.
