7-28-05 - If you play poker tournaments in local bars and restaurants, you may soon be forced to fold your hand. Poker tournaments across north Texas have been cancelled this week after a warning from the state attorney general.
Attorney General Greg Abbot says that any business with an alcoholic beverage permit cannot host a poker tournament in which players bet money.
TABC agents will only give a verbal warning the first time they walk in on a game. But the second time they won't be bluffing when they hand out tickets.
If busted, bar owners could ultimately get their liquor licenses suspended. As for those playing, they could be ticketed for gambling.
It is legal to play as long as you go somewhere that does not have an alcoholic permit.
