Funeral Set for Sherman Pilot

Video will be available shortly.

8-1-05 - Funeral plans have been set for 52-year-old David Estes of Sherman, who was killed Saturday afternoon when the small plane he was piloting crashed into the waters of Lake Texoma.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2pm at the Wynne Chapel on the Austin College campus.

DPS investigators say David Estes died on impact around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Estes is a well-known businessman and the owner of Sherman's 'Tactical Tanks.' The company opened about a year ago and specializes in leadership and team-building activities.

Witnesses say there was a sputter of the engine, then a puff of smoke before the plane went down. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman John Clabes says Estes' body was pulled from the lake by witnesses in boats after his aircraft lost power and fell into the water. Clabes says the crash, which occurred near a marina, was
videotaped by several people in and around the lake.

Clabes says Estes did what's known as a hammerhead stall and nosed over. He had performed one maneuver successfully but the engine sputtered on the second attempt and he did not recover.

Estes leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

State patrol and FAA investigators are investigating the crash.
